The Journey of Journalism

The Tiger Times have brought forth information and entertainment on a school-wide platform throughout the years at Hartselle High School, and its main goal is to publish an expertly written amateur paper for the community. Every staff member of the paper is dedicated to focusing their readers’ attention on, not just the news, but the emotions and cultures of everyone involved in order to provide a passionate depiction of real-world journalism. This includes the undertaking of interviews in a professional setting, taking scenic photographs of football games and other school events and eventually, using one’s knowledge of English and emotions to write a beautiful, published piece.

Dyroma Burroughs is the four-year long sponsor for The Tiger Times, and the co-editors include Abigail Winsett and Jaylin Daniel, all of whom aid in the formation of the newspaper. Using InDesign, articles are dropped onto a blank page along with titles and pictures to capture the attention of the audience. InDesign is the sister application of PhotoShop and uses computer technology to simply and quickly edit books or newspapers. The skills you obtain by using the software can be easily transferred into your life outside of high school if you are in a designing profession.

While journalism is not a career tech class, it prepares you to speak one on one and get outside of your comfort zone while also improving your writing abilities way beyond that of one’s peers. By effectively and creatively writing each and everyday in class, each student slowly polishes their craft until perfection is achieved. Through the use of student-led teaching, journalism also allows students to take on leadership roles and speak in public settings, relinquishing many students of their nervousness of talking to others. Overtime, a skilled student is honed into a professional author, and it is entirely feasible through The Tiger Times.
