Hartselle High School hosted its Homecoming Week Oct 2. The week ignited school spirit, unity, and a whole lot of stress.
The week kicked off Sep 30 with “Generation Day.” Each grade was assigned a different group of people to mimic: freshmen as babies, sophomores as elementary students, juniors as parents, and seniors as senior citizens. The halls were crowded with onesies, piggy tails, button-ups, and walkers. That night, maids and King nominees were announced and escorted on stage at the Homecoming Kick-Off. Then, each grade performed a skit. The seniors won first place with their Greatest Showman inspired skit. With an Alice in Wonderland mixed with Spongebob, Dora, and Ninja Turtles story, the juniors placed second. The sophomore’s performed a dance encompassing the magic of homecoming, and the freshmen launched into a “whole new world.” The night ended with the announcement of the 2019 Homecoming Court (pictured below).
Despite being drained from taking the ACT all day Tuesday, students, many of whom dressed comfortably for pajama day, dispersed after school to work on the float. This work started on Saturday and continued throughout the week.
On Wednesday, students dressed as their favorite Tik Tok or meme. The day sparked many unique outfits from students and teachers alike. HHS was filled with VSCO girls, E-boys and E-girls, vines, and memes. That night, students and parents crowded J. P. Cain for the annual powderpuff game. The juniors placed in fourth, and the freshmen landed in third. The sophomores and seniors were left to battle it out for the championship. The game proceeded into 3 overtimes; finally, the seniors and sophomores tied for first place. Students rushed from the games to their class’s float-building location and continued to work to get ready for Friday morning’s deadline.
By Thursday, classes were silent; everyone was tired. But soon the energy rose when everyone piled into the gym wearing their class shirt or class color to watch Battle of the Classes. The gym roared with strident yells. Teams competed in dodge ball tournaments, an intense game of music chair basketball, and various other competitions. The event ended with Seniors taking the win, and the sophomores taking a close second.
Finally, the week was winding to an end. Many seniors spent the night at J. P. Cain, while the other grades rose around 5 a.m. to set up their floats. The floats are displayed below from seniors to juniors to sophomores to freshmen. Judges scored each float after 7 a.m. Around 2 p.m., all HHS students crammed into the gym for the pep rally. Students proved their lack of sleep did not affect them by their incessant cheers. In addition to the normal pep rally happenings, the Homecoming Court was announced, the first and second place skit was performed, and Principal Brad Cooper announced the week’s finishing results. After announcing the juniors first place dress-up day win, students quieted to hear the long-awaited float winner. Sophomores took home the first place float win, with seniors right behind in second. The sophomores went wild. Juniors placed third, and freshmen placed fourth. With the combination of all the week’s points, seniors took home their second first place homecoming win. Sophomores ended in second; juniors placed third; and freshmen finished last.
At the Friday night football game, the community stopped to “oh” and “ah” at the class’ floats. The week ended with a big victory over Columbia-- a perfect way to finish a week filled with Hartselle spirit.
