HHS Kicks Off 2019 Homecoming

Updated: Oct 11, 2019

To kick off Homecoming week, Hartselle High School (HHS) students showed their school spirit to the community on Monday, Sept. 30. Frenzies of students gathered into the auditorium, some to walk out in glamorous dresses and suits as potential Homecoming Court nominees, others to participate in their grade's own skit, a short themed play created and led by student leadership. HHS was packed to the brim, filled with parents and the citizens of Hartselle, showing their never-ending support for the school system.

Right before 6:30 p.m., lines of young women formed to walk on stage. These girls were individually voted on by the student body to become homecoming maids, potential homecoming court members. Freshmen girls were visibly nervous; many audience members found it adorable to watch them cross the stage and take their escort's arm for the first time. Out of the maids, finalists from each grade were chosen to become members of the Timeless 2019 Hartselle Homecoming Court. The freshmen class is represented by Reagan Watson and Alison Hill; the sophomore class is represented by Maggie Guyse and Kendall Price; representing the Junior class are Turner Fentress and Julya McMinemon. Seniors Maddie Ferguson, Audrey Reeder and Kenzie Hamlett joined the court and consequently became nominees for the 2019 Homecoming Queen. What an honor it is to be chosen to represent one's grade!

After lead-outs, each grade performed a skit. Freshmen showed how high school seems to be “a whole new world,” placing fourth. Sophomores took third while they displayed the “magic of homecoming.” The second-place junior skit was based around Alice in Wonderland and other childhood favorites. Finally, the seniors, who placed first, created an emotional rendition of The Greatest Showman. Tears flowed through the crowd as seniors crowded around the stage singing lyrics from the movie’s song “From Now On.” The chorus of voices and moving lines “and we will come back home again” affirmed that HHS is in fact home to its students.

Clearly HHS has something special in its halls to be able to create such a meaningful and memorable atmosphere each year. If Monday night was any indication of the rest of the week, then this year’s homecoming is sure to be spectacular.
