Hartselle to Host Big Questions Debate

Hartselle’s Speech and Debate Team is hosting a Big Questions debate at Hartselle High School (HHS) Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. -12 p.m. Any and all students are encouraged to participate. There is no experience required. Speech and Debate President Walt Shelton urges students who have any interest in public speaking or debate to grab a friend and join the competition. This debate is a fun experience for students to get involved with their school and meet students and leaders from surrounding communities. In addition to the benefits of public speaking and researching the topic, participants can receive 4 hours for NHS or Key Club and, if they place, will receive an award.  Also, participation in the Big Questions Debate will look great on a resume. The two-person teams will be debating the resolution: objective morality exists. Simply put, both teams will discuss if there is an absolute and universal right and wrong. Teams will prepare a case for both affirmative and negative and will alternate arguing one or the other over the course of the three rounds. This debate also serves as a fundraiser for the HHS Speech and Debate Team. The team was formed this year and plans to compete in state and regional competitions in the spring and continue competing next school year.

For more information, contact Walt Shelton (HHS Speech and Debate President) or Kelly Cimino (the team’s sponsor). To join the debate, go to www.hartsellebigquestions.com
