Hartselle High School (HHS) teachers are superheroes. Each day HHS’s faculty members walk in with smiles on their faces. With speed and skill they explain a massive amount of information, perfectly prepared in a short amount of time. This in itself makes educators simply extraordinary. Megan Dillard is one of the teachers at HHS who continually raises the bar in her field. This year, Dillard applied the principles of hard work and commitment that she displayed in her off-campus life-style. How? She competed on the nationally televised show, American Ninja Warrior.
So, what exactly is American Ninja Warrior? The title itself proves that big shoes are needed to fill its name. Thousands of accomplished athletes spend countless hours training to earn a coveted spot on American Ninja Warrior. Once their spot on the show is earned, they push their bodies past all limits to attempt to become worthy of the title- American Ninja Warrior. The program entails six obstacle course challenges that put stress on one’s mind and body. Many have trouble completing all of them-- leaving few athletes to make it to the end. What happens when one is not able to complete the challenge? Each obstacle is suspended in the air. Failing means falling into the frigid water waiting down below for contestants to descend into. On the side-lines, fans cheer the contestants on, creating an exciting, tense atmosphere.
Dillard noted that she had always “watched the show, amazed at what people accomplished there.” Challenging herself mentally and physically has always been a big priority for this HHS teacher. When training, she threw herself into each practice. Dillard advises that “you need to believe in yourself. Simply, do not be afraid to fail.” Dillard notes that “Students need to realize that in any career failing is an option but they should not be worried for the future.”
Dillard stated that being on American Ninja Warrior is like being a teacher or a student. She stated that “as a teacher, just like on the show- I need to be ready for any obstacle every day.” Like teachers, students also need to be ready to dodge any obstacles that come their way.
Dillard loved everything about being on the show- especially “the rush when competing.” Dillard was amazed and had a “fan-girl” feeling when meeting other famous Warriors (veterans who have competed on the show before). It is an experience that she will never forget.
American Ninja Warrior is more than just a show. It is a chance to push the mind and body past all limits. It is an unbelievable challenge that requires courage, determination, and an intense work ethic. Dillard’s commitment to such an inspiring opportunity demonstrates her drive to continually push herself to be the best person she can be.This level of commitment overflows into her classroom as well; she goes above and beyond for her students.
So, will Hartselle see Mrs. Dillard on their television screens competing on American Ninja Warrior again? Dillard is not sure. Right now, she is taking a well deserved break.
