Thankful

By:Leighia Woodard

Every year the same question is asked, “What are you thankful for?” I do not think we look deep enough when answering this question. How can the answer be so vague for so many people? We often overlook the “small things” we have and are only worried about the newest technology or items that we want. Sometimes we focus more on what we do not have over what we do have. I, for one, am determined to keep a thankful mindset that includes being thankful for both things big and small.

It can be easy to take things for granted, but I am reflecting on how amazing it is to have all that I do. I, for one, have hot meals, clothes, a home, and any needs that I have taken care of. Most people in Hartselle are lucky enough to have family, friends, food, and basic necessities, but for some people in America this is not a reality. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, Alabama has 3,434 people statewide that are homeless as of 2018. Hartselle is certainly a blessed town because we are kind and loving to our neighbors. Our community is diverse and that is something to be thankful for in itself. When we see someone in need, there is a church ready to assist with those needs. The schools have clothing drives and food drives in order to help our community. I am thankful to live in a town where we are willing to help our neighbors.

I am thankful for my family and friends who are always there for me, hot meals, and a house with air conditioning and heating. I am thankful that I have plenty of clothes that fit and are in good condition. I am thankful for the way my needs are provided for. When I think of all that I have, I realize how blessed that I really am. That will cause me to have a thankful mindset all year long and not just this November. What are you truly most thankful for?
