Sites of Fright

By Leighia Woodard

If you believe in haunted places or just enjoy a good fright then there are some specific locations you must visit. In particular, there are three haunted places that will make your spine crawl.

One of the scariest places in the United States is The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. It was built in 1829 and took solitary confinement to new levels. Prisoners lived alone, exercised alone, and ate alone. When an inmate left his cell, a guard would cover his head with a hood so he could not see or be seen. The prison abandoned these practices in 1913. Even with these practices retired, punishments were still overly severe. It closed in 1970. Currently, you can tour the penitentiary if you dare. People have reported seeing figures as well as hearing screams, laughing, and footsteps.

The Hotel Monte Vista in Arizona has had its fair share of overstayed guests. The most noted is a long-term boarder who had a habit of hanging raw meat from the chandelier in Room 210. Two women who were murdered by being thrown out of the third story window now return to the hotel and try to asphyxiate male guests while they are asleep. Staying in this hotel would definitely be a good trip for Hallowen- if you make it out alive.

Now, do not worry if you cannot travel; Alabama has a very scary site just for you. Alabama’s first capital, Cahawba, is known for being a ghost town. It was abandoned after the Civil War. Now its empty buildings, slave burial grounds, and eerie cemeteries are an exciting place for ghost tours. The most noted tale is of a luminous orb appearing at the end of the former garden maze of Colonel C.C. Pegues's house shortly after he was killed in battle. Many think this is the Colonel's ghost. What do you think?
