Have you always attended HCS? Do you have a favorite teacher from elementary ?
Yes I have. My favorite teacher from Barkley Bridge Elementary is Mrs. Goss. She is super sweet! Do you remember your first day at HHS? How were you feeling? What would be your advice to upcoming HHS students?
I do remember my first day. I was nervous because I thought I would never find my classes. My advice to upcoming students is try to make the best out of every day at Hartselle High School. The 4 years will go by fast. What do you do outside of school? I know you barrel race, so could you describe that? How did you get into it? Why do you enjoy it?
Outside of school, I do barrel race and compete in rodeos. I got into it from some of my previous friends a few years ago. We started out at small races learning how and just doing it for the fun. I fell in love with competing and the adrenaline rush so for the past few years I have worked hard and practiced and now I’m to the point where I’ve gone from competing in small youth rodeos to competing in IPRA rodeos (International Professional Rodeo Association). You have many pets. How many? Do you spend time taking care of them?
I do have a few pets. I currently have 1 dog, 2 barn cats, and 7 horses. Yes, I feed the horses every night, a few of the occasionally get fed morning and night for a period of time. You brought some to school for an event. What was that? How was that experience?
I have brought my pets to school a time or two. I brought my horse that I barrel race on, Rookie, to FEB for the kids “Farm Day”. It’s a day where kids learn different things about farming and agriculture and they get to have close up experiences with the animals. It was super fun for everyone and it’s not everyday you get to bring your horse to school. I did also sneak my dog in for an FFA meeting and party one time. He ended up turning into the highlight of it!
Do you have a favorite class or teacher from HHS?
My favorite teacher from HHS was Greg Adams. He taught Agriculture and got me involved in FFA and competing on the Livestock Judging team. It was really fun and I got to go to the the Alabama FFA Convention in Montgomery at the end of the school year. Unfortunately, he retired my Sophomore year!
What made you take Spanish all 4 years? What did you enjoy about it?
I always thought that learning a little bit of Spanish is a good thing. After taking 2 years of it, I learned that it wasn’t so hard and I actually enjoyed it. Mr. Willingham makes the class really really fun! What is something you are proud of in the last four years? And if you could redo high school, would you?
Over the past 4 years, I am proud to say that I have kept all A’s and B’s throughout all of high school. I am also proud that I took and finished 4 years of both Agriculture and Spanish! If I could redo high school, I unfortunately would not redo it. What are your future plans?
My original plan was to go to the University of Tennessee Martin and compete on their rodeo team but last minute I have changed plans and decided to attend Calhoun this fall. I have a lot of responsibilities at home with taking care and training/raising horses I decided it would be best to not leave. Instead of doing college rodeo, next year I’m going to join a Southeastern Pro Rodeo Association. After I get my basics, I’m going to transfer to Athens State, unless I decide to do college rodeo, then I will go to UT Martin or UWA. What do you see yourself doing in 10 years? Do you have any big goals?
In the next 10 years, I see myself growing a business of raising/training/selling horses. I’m also getting into photography so maybe that will grow a lot too!
Congrats, Madison!
