The holidays- many know it as a time where life seems perfect, merry and bright. In Hartselle, the community holds traditions around Christmas, creating joy and harmony for families. Downtown Hartselle is festively decorated with lights and tinsel strung perfectly onto light poles each year. Hartselle High School’s band program takes part in the stunning Christmas parade. Crowds of people line the city’s streets watching in awe as the floats and sounds travel by them. Storefronts lining the downtown area hold small wonders inside them, perfect gifts for loved ones.
Though Hartselle is the Home of Southern Hospitality year-round, there seems to be an even friendlier air surrounding the community during the holidays. One can see neighbors shaking hands, people hosting parties or simply saying, “Have yourself a merry Christmas!” It truly is the most wonderful time of the year. This joyful feeling spreads through Hartselle High School’s (HHS) halls each year, creating excitement and anticipation for the upcoming holiday break.
There are countless Christmas traditions both at HHS and personally for students. Every year, music fills the auditorium with cheer as the band and chorus programs perform annual concerts, showcasing their talent, while pulling the school together as one for the holiday season. One student noted that each year her friends have “a Secret Santa to pull our group closer.” Traditions like these are remembered and cherished long after senior year by students. Many students take time over christmas break to visit family members. Other students enjoy watching Christmas movies; there are hundreds to choose from between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Hallmark. One student reported the sheer joy just found in “eating at the table together, talking.” Some students reported that every year on Christmas, they bond with their parents by making cookies and delivering them to friends and strangers. Some students make pies of all kinds, or something savory like dressing to eat. Each of these activities involves one thing- love. Whether it is love for friends, love for family, love for food, or love for the holiday season in general, love is definitely in the air.
These Christmas traditions create something to look forward to each year as they inevitably creating a child-like joy in each citizen. From traditions new and old, The Tiger Times wishes every student here at HHS and every citizen of Hartselle a merry Christmas.
