On Oct. 3, Hartselle High School’s (HHS) much-awaited Battle of the Classes took place in the HHS gym. Students proudly donned their class shirts and music blared over the speakers as feelings of school pride and enthusiasm radiated throughout the gym.
At 1:50 p.m., the battle officially commenced. Each of the five Battle of the Classes Teams--freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and teachers-- marched to the gym floor with great enthusiasm. The battle began with the recycling bin race. This event called for participants to race to a recycling bin positioned on one side of the gym, take their shoes off and place them in the bin, and then race back to the opposite side of the gym. Once the participants successfully completed this task, they had to run back to the recycling bin to put on their shoes before running back to the other side of the gym. The teachers scored the first win for the Battle of the Classes, as they came in first place for this event. Juniors placed second, while seniors placed third and freshmen came in fourth.
The first round of Tug of War took place next and began with the seniors and sophomores facing each other. The sophomores hastily pulled the seniors over the designated line on the gym floor, eliminating them with an ease that shocked the senior class. Next, the juniors and freshmen squared off, and the juniors captured the win.
Sophomores kicked off the first round of the dodgeball tournament by immediately eliminating a junior participant. Towards the end of the game, all but one junior participant, LeeAnna Powell, had been eliminated. Eventually, the Sophomores eliminated Powell and won the round. The freshmen showed promise during the second round of the dodgeball tournament by immediately eliminating a senior. However, the seniors defeated the freshmen in the end, capturing the win.
The next event, dizzy bat basketball, required participants to spin around ten times with their head on a baseball bat before running to the basketball goal and scoring a basket. This activity was very entertaining for some audience members, as the dizziness of a few competitors was very apparent. The seniors attained the first place victory for this event. The sophomores placed second, juniors third, and freshmen fourth.
The toilet paper wrap called for students to wrap members of the teacher Battle of the Classes team in toilet paper. Judges chose winners based on which team wrapped the teachers most sufficiently. Each class wrapped two teachers. The juniors came in first place in this event, the seniors second, the sophomores third, and the freshmen fourth.
Audience members were on the edge of their seats during musical chairs basketball. The competitive nature of all Battle of Classes participants truly shone through during this event. After an intense game, the juniors came in first, followed by the freshmen in second, seniors in third, and sophomores in fourth.
The last activities of the battle were the final rounds of tug of war and dodgeball. The freshmen battled the seniors for third place in tug of war. The seniors successfully secured the third place position by quickly defeating the freshmen, putting the freshmen in fourth place. The battle for first place in tug of war saw the sophomores square off against the juniors. The sophomores earned first place, putting the juniors in second place. The juniors faced the freshmen for third place in dodgeball, and the seniors faced the sophomores for first place. The juniors beat the freshmen, and the seniors beat the sophomores, making seniors first place, sophomores second place, juniors third place, and freshmen fourth place.
Following the final rounds of tug of war and dodgeball, students anxiously awaited to learn the winner of the battle. The freshmen had a total of seven points, putting them in fourth place overall. The juniors gathered a total of 19 points, making them the third place winners. The sophomores earned second place with a total of 20 points. Finally, the seniors snagged the win with a grand total of 21 points.
Battle of the Classes concluded with the seniors and sophomores, who were extremely proud of their victories, rushing to the center of the gym and celebrating. Though Battle of the Classes sparked an intense competition between HHS’s classes, it brought all tiger fans together by displaying the immense pride that HHS students have in their school.
