Boys basketball ends a successful season

By Jaxson Dabbs

As Hartselle High School’s varsity basketball season comes to a close, we are going to look back at the highs and lows of their incredible season.

At the start of the season, the Varsity boys went 8-0 before their first loss against the Austin Black Bears. The final score was 83-75. They won three more games before they suffered their 2nd loss to Woodlawn, losing by four points.

After the two losses in between five games, they went on a twelve-game win streak, including wins against Cullman, Muscle Shoals, and Decatur (twice).

They beat Florence once in the twelve games with a blowout win, 73-57, but they would come back again to end the streak, with Florence beating Hartselle 88-77. The Tigers ended the regular season 24-3 and then won the Area Championship.

The Tigers were 13-1 at home, 9-2 at away games, and 2-1 at neutral sites.

Hartselle advanced to the sub-regional to play Pinson Valley. In the first quarter, Hartselle led 19-13, but they would start to trail 36-32 going into the second half. The Tigers would try to make a comeback and win from behind, but they came up short. Seniors Brody Peebles, Trent Wright, Elijah Kellick, and Tevin Shields had a sad end to their season with the 62-59 loss against Pinson Valley. Pinson Valley went on to lose against Scottsboro, 69-67.

It was rare to see a game where Brody Peebles did not score over 20 or more points. He was simply on fire this season, along with his teammates who dominated in every way possible. Trent Wright led in rebounds, assists, and steals. 6th man Elijah Kellick was a force off the bench, leading the season with blocks. Tevin Shield’s athleticism gave the team a spark on their defense.

The team, coached by Faron Key, was outstanding on and off the court. Congratulations to the team for an amazing season!
