High school years are full of activities: basketball games and honor society inductions, homework sessions and club meetings. Many students must attend all these activities and then work after school. Students must organize their schedules and plan accordingly in order to balance their hectic schedules.
Hannah Rice works at Hartselle Gymnastics spotting the gymnasts and teaching the skills. Sarah Chandler works at Buffalo Wild Wings as a cashier. Antonio Jimenez works for Sunoco as a part of the Tiger Launch program, allowing him to have a job and prepare for his future. Rice, Chandler and Jimenez all work to balance their activities the same way: finishing their school work before work and planning everything out. Chandler said, “It is very difficult to handle and maintain but if you get a flow going and plan everything out in the beginning of the week, it helps.”
Junior Claire Alford has always enjoyed baking. During quarantine, she started Claire’s Cookie Company. She runs a website where people can order sweet treats and bakes cookies weekly. She also sells DIY baking kits in retail stores. Alford says it’s not easy to keep up with her company, school, and extracurricular activities, but she simply tries her best to keep up with work and plan around all her activities.
Sophomore Maisie Waynick loves seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they receive a cookie from her decorated sugar cookie business. In addition to discovering how fun baking can be, Waynick has learned running a business takes planning and organization. It has taught her to be responsible, proactive, and organized.
People used to film using VHS tapes; now, because people don’t use VHS tapes, those videos are gone. Junior Jaxon Bladow converts people’s VHS tapes to DVDs. Now that he has learned this skill, he is able to work, do schoolwork, and save people’s memories simultaneously.
Alison Hill watched baking shows when she was little. She loved watching people bake, and she wanted to do it too. She solicited the help of her aunt who bakes cakes for people, and soon, she was baking them on her own. She bakes cakes and cupcakes for weddings, birthdays, and other events. Hill has an organized schedule to help her balance work and school: she bakes the night before and frosts the next day, leaving ample time for school and extracurricular activities.
Whether working for a company or owning their own business, students must balance work and school effectively. Students balance best by planning and working hard. They are spending time in high school investing in their future.
